West Virginia

Due to its location in the Appalachian region of the United States, West Virginia is known for being the most southern of the northern states, the most northern of the southern states, and the most western of the eastern states. West Virginia lies completely within the Appalachian mountain range, giving it the nickname of the Mountain State. The state has a current population of 1.77 million and was originally part of Virginia before seceding and forming its own state. It was the only state to form by separating from a Confederate state.

The horse population in West Virginia is about 61,500, making it one of the most populated states for horses in the eastern and northeastern parts of the United States. Part of the reason for the increased popularity of horse properties in West Virginia is because of its more favorable climate compared to most of its northern neighbors. West Virginia has a humid continental climate with an average temperature of 52 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition, West Virginia has an outdoor beauty to it that makes it perfect for equestrian or any other outside activities. 75 percent of the state is covered in forests and there are many hiking and horseback trails to be found.
