How Much Water Does a Horse Need?

An average horse typically drinks 5 to 10 gallons of water per day, but during the summer, that number can easily double. Horses that are exercising, traveling, nursing foals, or spending long hours outdoors may require 15 to 20 gallons or more each day, depending on the weather and their workload.

Rather than focusing on an exact number, pay attention to changes in your horse’s normal drinking habits. A sudden decrease in water consumption is often more important than the total amount consumed.

Signs Your Horse May Not Be Drinking Enough

Some signs of dehydration are subtle and easy to miss. Watch for:

  • Provide shade to help keep water cooler throughout the day.
  • Offer multiple water sources in larger pastures.

Horses that sweat heavily lose more than just water—they also lose important electrolytes such as sodium, chloride, and potassium.

Electrolyte supplementation can be beneficial for horses in regular work, endurance riding, competitions, or prolonged exposure to high heat. However, electrolytes should never replace access to fresh water. In fact, horses receiving electrolytes should always have unlimited water available.
