"Sun, Silence, and Adobe" is how Lumis described this part of northern New Mexico in 1893. In many respects little has changed. If you are looking for a place to get away from the fast pace "out there", short or long-term, this may be it. The 3000+ sq.ft. home was built in the Southwest style-adobe, large timbers, vigas & latillas. It is nestled into the edge of the forest on a mesa (Llano de la Yegua)overlooking the quiet Penasco valley. Jicarita Peak ,at just over 13,000 ft, and often snowcapped, towers above the entire area. The mesa is primarily a hay producing area of small irrigated pastures. The 70 acres, the house sits on, has 25 acres of timothy hay and red clover. Within a mile or two are 5 ranches averaging 300 acres each, mostly forest, but the majority of the nearby properties are smaller .Six ski resorts within 60 miles, including Taos, Red River & Angel Fire. The Carson National Forest boundary is 1 mile east, and the Pecos Wilderness is 4 miles further into the mountains, making this a horse riding heaven. The Espanola Valley, with it's extraordinary views of the Jemez & Sangre De Cristo Mountains, desert bluffs and the Rio Grande along with several Indian pueblos is 30 miles in the other direction. Views from this property include all of this. The 2 separate buildings consist of a casita(1200sqft) and a multipurpose building (2000sqft). This has been used as a shop, studio ,gallery and barn at various times. Approximately 600 sq.ft carport attached. The south facing windows on all 3 buildings provide winter solar gain. Each building has propane fired radiant heat and a woodstove or kiva. Forest is a big component of the property. The 45 acres of mixed conifer forest, behind the house, has been thinned and restored allowing the vegetation to come back. This makes the forest more fire safe and provides a healthier environment for plants & animals as well. As many as 70 elk walking past the house to eat in the pasture, have been counted. There is a landowner elk permit and the property is registered as an American Tree Farm. There is a meadow and spring in the canyon. There are 4 ponds(2 fulltime) and 4 cisterns on the property. It has fiber optic internet service and Direct tv satellite dish. The upstairs loft/bedroom/library area has views that are unmatched. Wake up to a view that will take your breath away. Come sit in the hot tub, located in the greatroom; unwind and relax, no matter the weather outside. Extra room is used as an office but can also be used for extra sleeping or set up as library, workout space, etc. There is an outdoor Horno - outdoor baking, 1/2 mile gravel driveway, well at 380 ft depth(hit a river) and an older well, but slower producer. Root celler, accessed from inside the house, 2 kitchens - one can be used as a wetbar. Shop/studio/carport has been used as a furniture shop, has an oil change pit, a concrete block vault (tool storage), earth sheltered, 2 story and upstairs attic storage. Guesthouse is 2 story, except great room. Cathedral ceiling tongue & groove. Has been rented for the last 5 years full time. Wonderful family compound or rental income from the Casita. Come unwind, relax and breath in beautiful northern New Mexico under the grace of our lovely Jicarita mountain.
