About New York

It is the nation's third populous state and ranks as the 27th largest state by size.

New York is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, with a population of over 8,000,000 people, is the most populous city in the United States. Both state and city were named for the 17th

century Duke of York, James Stuart, future James II and VII from England and Scotland.

In contrast with New York's urban atmosphere, the vast majority of the state is dominated by farms, forests, rivers, mountains, and lakes. New York's Adirondack Park is the largest state park in the United States. It is larger than the Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Glacier and Olympic National Parks combined. New York established the first state park in the United States at Niagara Falls in 1885. Today the state has 178 State Parks.

Upstate New York and Downstate New York are often used informally to distinguish New York City or its greater metropolitan area from the rest of New York state. The placement of a boundary between the two is a matter of great contention. Unofficial and loosely defined regions of Upstate New York include the Southern Tier which often includes the counties along the border with Pennsylvania, and the North Country which can mean anything from the strip along the Canadian border to everything north of the Mohawk River.

Weather in New York is heavily influenced by two continental air masses: a warm, humid one from the southwest and a cold, dry one from the northwest.

The winters are long and cold in the Plateau Divisions of the state. The summer climate is cool in the Adirondacks, Catskills and higher elevations of the Southern Plateau.

The New York City / Long Island area and lower portions of the Hudson Valley have rather warm summers by comparison, with some periods of high, uncomfortable humidity. The remainder of New York State enjoys pleasantly warm summers, marred by only occasional, brief intervals of sultry conditions.

The New York horse industry is valued at $1.4 billion. The national industry has a $2.4 billion impact on the New York economy when the multiplier effect of spending by industry suppliers and employees is taken into account. 152,000 New Yorkers are part of the equine life inNew York, either as horse owners, service providers, employees or volunteers. The New York horse industry directly provides 12,700 full-time (FTE) jobs. Spending by suppliers and employees (in New York and other states) generates additional jobs in New York for a total employment impact of 35,200. Over 70% of the 202,000 horses in New York are involved in showing and recreation.

Amish Farm in Troupsburg, NY

Troupsburg, Steuben County, New York

This beautiful farm in the green, rolling hills of Troupsburg, Steuben County, New York, about 7.5 miles north of the Pennsylvania/New York border will captivate you with its verdant beauty. Its +-150 acres are enhanced by three improvements: a residence, and two barns. An additional +-150 acres (to total 306.55 acres) are available for purchase for $350,000. The additional acreage is comprised of 82 lightly wooded acres and tillable 57.05 acres. The spacious Amish-built residence of wood and block construction sits on about 7.5 acres and was built in 2008. Its two stories and 3,344 square feet encompass about 11 rooms, an enclosed 336 sf porch, a full basement, and a walk-in attic. The house has well insulated windows and is built of quality materials. Heated by a large wood stove, electricity is installed to the building but the inside of the house is not wired. The property has a well and septic tank, but the previous owners used two outhouses, one indoors with a gray water system, and one outdoors. The farm has been used for dairy cattle, to graze grass-fed cattle, and to grow crops. A 3,496 sf wood horse barn with wood floors, block foundation, steel roof and a half-story hay loft of 1,240 sf, and a one-story steel, open-side dairy barn of 24,040 sf housed the livestock--could easily be converted into a large horse stable. There are several other outbuildings. Electric service is available to the horse barns also, but again there is no interior wiring. With its own pond and two streams, this little piece of paradise is a clean slate for you to make it your own. Its ready for you to apply your own vision—a working horse farm, bed and breakfast, or haycation venue.
