The property on 11600 North Oracle road has been significant to many people. It was originally a Spanish ranch that assisted in changing out horses for travelers and coaches. It was later a working ranch with an airstrip as part of the ranch. The airstrip was marked with white rocks. The white rocks where seen from the sky and read “Cielo Tierra” (Sky land). The ranch was later split. The buildings became part of a boys ranch, while the property that is currently the Catalina State Park was a Cattle ranch up till the 1970’s.
The Russell Ranch Boys School occupied the buildings in the mid 1940’s. The main house was the kitchen and dinning hall. The outlying buildings housed the boys, while other buildings where their class rooms. The Russell Ranch boys’ school was sold and the new owner rented out the buildings as furnished apartments. This was then bought by Baarent Biesemeyer and wife Margaret Laubscher. They continued to run it as rental property while their family lived in the main house. The property has been in the Biesemeyer name for over 50 years. . The airstrip and rocks where still adjacent to the property when Baarent bought the property, thus the name “Cielo Tierra”. The entrance to the Catalina State Park is on the airstrip that was associated with the property.
